Mr. Spine, say hello to Mr. Tree
January 5, 2008 6:34 pmWent snowboarding Thursday. I hit a tree. In the back. Yes, it felt absolutely wonderful.
So here’s the story. I’ve got snowboarding down. I’m not awesome or anything, but I’d like to think I’m fairly decent. I haven’t gotten jumps or grinds down, but I can fly and carve and all that jazz. So, having fun going down a run, I took a little offbeat path, a short run through some trees. I started out pretty slow, and found that I quickly picked up speed without any room to slow down. I was doing alright even with the speed, until the path was ready to merge with regular run. It sharply curved, and I was heading right for a tree with no chance to stop, and the turn was too sharp for me to make (or at least my mind wasn’t really thinking about it once I saw the tree heading straight for me). So, I tried a small turn, and at the last second grabbed a large branch sticking out. That at least helped soften the blow. My body twisted and the side of my back on the right side caught the tree and a bit of an angle.
And that freakin’ hurt. I laid there for a few seconds, trying to comprehend what some guy was saying to me. When my brain stopped shaking, I heard him ask if I was ok. After a quick recon of bones and skin, I finally assessed that, yes, I was ok. After reassuring him I was ok, he lightened the mood with a “That was a nice hit, man!” . After thanking him for stopping to help, I continued on down the run.
The pain subsided for awhile, but after waiting and sitting on the lift for awhile, the sore spot started to tighten up, and I decided I was good for the day.
I also had another major spill earlier in the day when I attempted a rather large jump (which was probably not the best decision to make), but I came out ok, and I gave the guys on the lift a nice spill show.
Unfortunately, however, mine was not the only injury of the day. At the beginning of the day, a friend was doing really well, flying down the hill, until she hit a small divet (probably combo’d with me and another friend shouting to her from the lift) and went facedown and tumbling. It really sucks to see this from the lift knowing you cant do shit till you get off and go down the run. Well, anyway, she seemed mostly ok till around the same time I decided I was done. I found out today she probably has a broken rib.
P.S. - Getting out of bed? It sucks. I have to roll because it hurts too much to sit up.
